Ballina Arts Centre will be the venue for a unique celebration of the life of singer, Delia Murphy on Thursday March 26, at 8pm. I’ll Live ‘til I Die: A celebration in story and song of the iconic Delia Murphy will be a night of stories and songs made famous by Delia. Presented by Aidan O’Hara (RTÉ’s Fáilte Isteach, and author of the popular biography on Delia I’ll Live ‘til I Die), the evening will feature songs such as ‘The Spinning Wheel’ and ‘If I were a Blackbird’, sung by Joyce O’Hara and accompanied by Aidan. Reading and commentary by Carmen Cullen niece of Delia Murphy, and author of poetry books and children’s dramatist, from her novel Two Sisters Singing, a family memoir with a fictional base inspired by the personality of her famous aunt. Delia Murphy (born February 16 1902 in Claremorris, Co. Mayo, died February 11 1971 in Dublin) was a world famous singer and collector of Irish ballads.

Get your own seat at the theatre

Ballina families are rushing to buy their seats for the new state-of-the-art theatre in Ballina Arts Centre of which building is due to start in August of this year. Except they are not buying seats for one show, but for all time. For €500 a seat will be named in honour of your family and for €1,000 you can also be named as a founding member, with your name added to a brass plaque in the foyer of the new building.

Literary brunch in aid of Ballina Arts Centre redevelopment

As part of the fund-raising efforts for the Ballina Arts Centre Redevelopment campaign, there will be a Meet the Author Brunch in the Downhill Hotel, tomorrow (Saturday) at 12 noon.

Last chance to see Time to Fly exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre

This week will be the last opportunity to see Time to Fly, an exhibition of artworks from service-users of Ballina Training Centre, at Ballina Arts Centre. Ballina Training Centre participated in an ‘arts-needs’ research project initiated by the arts centre in 2005. As a result the training centre sourced Westport-based artist Claire Griffin to work with the group. The workshops with Claire took place over a two-year period until June 2008.

Still Life next up for Ballina film club

Ballina Film Club’s spring programme continues next week with Still Life at Ballina Arts Centre on Tuesday May 5 at 8pm. Jia Zhangke's Still Life, a deeply felt and quietly impressive film, was the winner of the Golden Lion at last year's Venice film festival, and features the superb and elegant actress Zhao Tao, charismatic star of his previous films Unknown Pleasures (2002) and Platform (2000).

Beard shave in Erris

A local businessman will have his beard shaved off on Friday May 15 in the Western Strands Hotel at 9.30pm in aid of the Erris Cancer Support Group. Please support.
